Expedition to Oz

Near the Madura Roadhouse

The team inspects a sinkhole.

Hearty holds shells he’s found and proclaims that at this site, waves were “lapping at your feet during the Pliocene.”

The team inspects the Roe Plains, a crescent of land below Madura, a truck and tourist stop more than 100 miles from the nearest town. The team finds shells, suggesting a seashore was once nearby, in a small pit 87 feet above current sea level. Later lab work in Boston derived ages for the shells in the range of 2.3 to 4 million years old. Most likely, the shells lived during the Pliocene.
